Gavin: 11 Months!

Can you believe it?  11 months!  One more month to the big ONE!
It's been a big month for Gavin.

On April 7th:  Nate was getting dressed and Gavin said (we swear!) "Dada ah dah?"  Daddy all done?  He definitely babbles in a conversational tone that really sounds like words much of the time.  Gavin is incredibly verbal, and we are able to actually understand a lot of what he babbles!!

Also on the 7th, Gavin took two steps!

On the 14th, he stood up from the ground without holding onto anything.

On the 18th, he was really starting to walk in groups of steps.

On the 21st, he was choosing to walk more than crawl - at least to start each trip someplace!  He would walk a few steps, fall, then crawl the rest of the way.  This is where we still are today the 25th.  His walking is adorable - more of a shuffle, with his hands way up in the air!

In the last month, Gavin still doesn't have much visible hair.  It's there, you can feel it, but it's hard to see.  He still has six teeth, but I see swollen spots on his gums where new teeth should come up soon.  Gavin has the chubbiest little feet!  They crack me up with their roundness.

He loves playing with the scooter, his woodland creatures (a tree trunk stuffy with little animals peeking out), my silicon spatula, any car that he can vroom across the floor, the TV remote, whatever Laura is playing with and books.  He is totally, completely cheerfully, mischievous.  He'll pull open the baby gate, go up two steps, then wait for us to come after him before climbing the stairs as fast as possible.  He loves getting up the step stool to reach into the sink and grab whatever he can (gross).  He's tried to open the trash a few times, too - luckily he hasn't really enjoyed getting his hands stuck under the lid, so he doesn't go after the trash too often.  Gavin loves the basketball, especially when we bounce it to him for him to catch - he rolls it back to us to do it again!

Red Shoe Shuffle

We got up really early on April 14th to drive into Baltimore for a race!  Our whole family ran in the Ronald McDonald House Red Shoe Shuffle 5k.  Mommy borrowed a fancy jogging stroller for Gavin to ride in (Team Gummi Bear), while Daddy and I were going to run together (Team ThunderCats).  But I was a little grumpy, and even though I had a race bib and timing chip, I decided I'd rather ride in the stroller.  I defected to Mommy's team, and Gavin was kind enough to hop onto Daddy's shoulders for the run.

Mommy and I stayed with Daddy and Gavin for the first little bit while they got situated.  But once Daddy figured out how to run/walk with Gavin, Mommy and I totally ditched them!  Mommy wanted to get a good time on the run, even though she had never run with a stroller before.  I liked going so fast in the comfy stroller, and waving to all the people cheering us on.  I was pretty sure we were supposed to be running TO a hospital, not FOR a hospital, but I was a pretty good cheerleader for Mommy anyway.

We crossed the finish in 34 minutes!!  Go Team Gummi Bear!  Daddy and Gavin came in with a 45 minute time, which isn't bad since Daddy had to walk so much of it.  The best part was the ice cream I got to eat at the end.  And that all the runners raised over $250,000 for the children.

Mommy would like to add that she and Daddy had a great night out with Matt and Melissa the night before, while Gavin and I stayed home, playing with Mommy's friend Becca.  The grown-ups went out to dinner at Tio Pepe (I hear it's fabulous), then saw Les Miserables at the Hippodrome.  They came home with rave reviews of their evening.  I got to have breakfast with Matt and Melissa the next day after our race - a fun weekend all around!

Walking!

Today was a banner day for our family using feet to get places!

Mommy ran the Cherry Blossom 5k in the morning, with an official time of 29:40!  Go Mommy!  I don't know for sure, but I think that was a pretty good time.  Mommy seems really happy with it.  And we're all doing another 5k this coming weekend - together!  Laura says she wants to run too.  We'll see how long she lasts!

I'm not quite ready to run any 5k races, but I'm getting really close to walking!  I took several steps yesterday afternoon.  Of course, by the time Mommy found the camera to record my steps, I dissolved into a fit of the giggles.  She got a couple of steps filmed - and I'm cute enough to make up for the poor video!

Laura: March Update

A few notes from Laura this past March:

Laura, pull yourself together!
I can't! I'm losing my pieces!

Why did Jesus die?
So God could forgive us our sins!
Why did God give us Allisons?

Grammy we should text so we can see each other

We back away from Pippi when she is fwizzering.  (Pippi shakes a little when she's nervous)

March 20th: Laura was in tears when Nate said he'd feed Pippi her breakfast
"That's my job!!! I feed Pippi! I have to be 'sponsible!!" (Then I remembered Pippi doesn't get breakfast, tears abated, tragedy avoided!)

3/25: Laura's been asking for a cave... We gave her a castle:

Laura started a new internet meme sensation: Pippi-ing (lying on the couch back like Pippi)

Shoveling: I'm doing hard work and I'm going to get tired.

Watching Downton Abbey: That grandma (Maggie smith) talks funny. Sigh, when will she stop talking?

Laura and Nate spent breakfast debating the merits of being a princess. Nate claimed she should not want to be one since they lead an entitled life and have little ability to make own choices "like be anastronaut"
Laura says she wants to be the first astronaut princess.  She said "Daddy the point is I will be both!"
Hard to argue with that!  Nate is not used to losing an argument to a 3 year old. Her top five career choices in no order are:
-princess
-astronaut
-engineer
-singer, or
-dancer
Though the way she argues there is hope for Grandpa that she'll be a lawyer!

Easter 2013

Easter this year wasn't just another holiday... it was the first holiday that our family of four has spent just the four of us!  The first Easter ever that Daddy hasn't been with his family, and the first since 2002 since Mommy hasn't been with Daddy's family!  Woah - that's a long time!

So here are some pictures of our small but happy holiday, just the four of us:

Our baskets!!  Easter bunny hooked us up!  I made the cute little house with Grandma.

Gavin wore some sweet leiderhosen that were Uncle Parke's a long long day ago.  He looked fabulous - and he totally knew it!

We loved tearing through our baskets.  I'm not sure either of us actually really looked at the contents of our basket to tell you what we got - it was more fun just tearing through and unloading the loot!

I got really fancy bunny ears that I wore for about 30 seconds!

I wore them long enough to give Pippi a hug.

We all went to church, where we were reasonably well behaved.  Then we went to the Rusty Scupper for their fabulous Easter Jazz Brunch!  So much food!  So many desserts!!  We all ate until we couldn't eat anymore.  It was delicious.  Here is a cute picture of all four of us mostly looking at the camera and smiling - a miracle!

And later on, I got to eat some of my chocolate bunny.  YUM!

Workin' Hard for the Money (and eggs)

Grammy came down for a quick visit March 21 - 23, before going across the country to California to be with Bimpy.  Since she wasn't here for long, I decided that she should go with Gavin, Mom and me to DC to Mom's work for a day!  I supervised the arrangements, and got us on a train Friday morning, poste haste.  Gavin and I both liked the window seat.

I set Gavin to work at the computer while I colored and answered the phones.

Gavin worked so hard, he fell right asleep.  I took the opportunity to go with Grammy into the galleries to visit Owney and the big truck.
Not pictured here, but our cousins Callie and Mimi were in town - so they stopped by to see Owney, the big truck and us!  It was a quick visit, but was so exciting to see them.  We had lunch with Mom's coworkers, but the rest of our day sorta went to pot after that.  I may have had an accident... and may have had to wear Gavin's last diaper on the train home.  We were planning to take the 2:20 train - but we definitely did whatever we could to catch the train after that!  Gavin was exhausted from everything, so he slept the whole ride home.

Grammy was still visiting on Saturday, so she accompanied us to the Annual Easter Egg Hunt (while Mommy was at Aunt Jen's bridal shower in NJ)!

Gavin and I both got so many eggs!

I especially had fun running and running with my buddies.
Gavin didn't run (duh), but I still think he had fun!

Grammy had to leave before we woke up Sunday morning.  I was sad I couldn't drop her off at the airport.  But I'm really glad she came for a visit!  We'll see you soon, Grammy and Bimpy!

Trip to Grammy's

Mommy decided at the very, very last minute to take me on her "no kids" trip to Grammy's house on March 15th!  We didn't tell Grammy and Bimpy until I was on the plane, when we sent this awesome picture.  I was so excited to be able to go to Grammy's house one last time before their big move!

When we got to Grammy's house, Mommy remembered why she hadn't planned on taking kids - the house was a beehive of pre-move activity!  The floors were covered with cardboard, while the movers boxed and packed and moved.  Mommy kept trying to help go through stuff, but also had to keep up with curious me.  I got into everything - boxes included!

My favorite part was going through the cupboards, and emptying out all the muffin tins and cake pans.  I made the same big mess over and over!  But Mommy said at least I was sort of contained, and nothing was breakable.  She mentioned her back hurting from carrying me so much?  I was slightly clingy, which isn't how I usually am, so Mommy carried me a lot.

Saturday night, Mommy and all my aunts and uncles through a BIG birthday party for Grammy!  Lots and lots of friends showed up, and everyone wanted to hug me.  I was ok with a few hugs here and there, but I was pretty tired from helping the movers pack all day, so I just wanted my Mommy.  She put me to bed where I slept uncharacteristically badly.  I just wanted to be included in the party (and/or be wearing my sleep sack that was in the washer, silly Mom)!

We packed some more on Sunday, oversaw a bunch of stuff being loaded in a UHaul to be driven by Bimpy to our house, and then hopped on a plane back to Maryland.

Mommy says it's funny to think that we won't visit that house again.  I think that as long as we can visit Grammy and Bimpy, it doesn't matter what house they're in!  And besides, we'll always have The Cape!  Here's looking at you, kid!

Gavin: Ten Months

Gavin's turned ten months old on March 18th!  I can't believe he is so close to his first birthday.  WOW.

Gavin had an exciting tenth month, kicked off with the peanut incident.  A big thank you to everyone for NOT telling Grammy/Marjorie about it.

Gavin is still cruising furniture and crawling.  He could walk if he had more confidence - he is so, so close to taking steps.  He is climbing stairs with alarming confidence.

Gavin has some consistent, though infrequent, words:
  • On  February 26th, Laura was babbling about dogs.  Gavin started shouting "OOF!"  And when we asked "Gavin, what does a puppy say," he answered "OOF!"  (Laura also chimed in with "Woof starts for W!")
  • He often says "DA!" for dog and "Dada" for Daddy
  • He's been doing a version of the all done sign while saying "Ah da!"
  • He's finally saying mum-mum more often!
  • He sometimes says "Ba" when he wants a drink
Gavin is eating more and more finger foods, and less tubs of purees.  He loves grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, and spinach pancakes.

He has been drinking water out of a sippy cup - and generally making a huge, wet mess.

Speaking of wet mess, Gavin loves splashing in the dogs' water bowls - especially dumping them completely over.  Poor Pippi and Ries have to wait till he's out of the house or in bed for water!  (Oh yes, and we have Pippi staying with us for a few weeks!)

Gavin loves Pippi.  Pippi is tolerant of Gavin.

The tenth month was fun - I expect my next monthly recap will announce that Gavin is walking!
